Key points

  • Bronchiolitis mainly affects young children; the youngest may need hospital care.

  • Protection can be planned during pregnancy or with the team caring for your baby.

  • Everyday precautions remain useful even after preventive protection.

What protection can my baby receive?

Vaccination during pregnancy or protection for the baby?

There are two strategies against RSV, the virus most often responsible: vaccinating the pregnant woman during the recommended period, or giving the baby a preventive antibody. The latter is not a vaccine.

How is the choice made?

The midwife, doctor or maternity team checks factors such as gestational age, birth date and protection already received. Discuss it before birth or during infant follow-up: the approach depends on your baby’s situation.

Does this prevent every case of bronchiolitis?

No. These protections target RSV; other viruses can also cause bronchiolitis. Hygiene measures therefore remain useful.

Daily habits to keep

  • Wash your hands before caring for the baby.

  • Ventilate your home regularly and avoid all exposure to smoke.

  • Limit visits to close contacts who are not ill, especially in the first months.

  • Avoid kissing the baby’s face and hands; do not pass the baby from person to person.

  • If you have a cold or cough, wear a mask during close contact.

Discuss it before winter

At your next contact with the maternity team or your child’s healthcare professional, ask: “What protection has my baby already received? Is anything needed for this season?”
